Gesture, attitude, sentiment, value systems and gifts are all important considerations for me when thinking and making work. The value of a gesture, the attitudes of others to value, sentiment is almost compulsory to engage with my work. I take great care when preparing scene's or narratives, that attention to detail and preciseness of presentation is important to my thinking and making process. I work to achieve a strong sense of stillness in the work, quiet like a gentle conversation. The best gifts do not come in wrapping paper. They take the form of Attitudes, of gestures and sentiments, of solidarity and pertinent aid in its season. Consider the tradition established by Rikkyu-No-Sen, Japan's greatset tea master, in which a host who has invitied a friend to tea decorates his room with a spray of Blossom and an inscription chosen to celebrate their freindship.
In the refinement of the choice is the tenderness of the act and with it the largeness of the gift it represents. Gifts,Part111; Amenities and Good. The Meaning of Things, Applying Philosophy to Life, A.C. Grayling. 2001 Event: make - 09.10.2008 - 08.11.2008 |
