In the Liverpool International Artists exhibition at Novas CUC, Willcox premiers colour saturated, semi-abstract images commemorating the fatal 1987 Kings Cross London Underground Fire from which he narrowly escaped and which, in a ‘coming-of-age’, passes its 21st anniversary during the Biennial programme. At the end of the Liverpool International Artists show these pieces transfer to Novas CUC London Bridge Bankside, opening on the night of 18 November 2008, the actual anniversary of this tragic event.

In probably the last show in the Biennial programme, he is showing, in a solo exhibition at the Foyer Gallery, Novas CUC Liverpool, ‘Rush Hour’, a body of work that recreates his experiences of rush hour with a sight-impaired condition. Willcox says: “The surges of movement, flickering speed and chaos of converging and diverging masses in rush hour is a source of anxiety for many, but for me it is often overwhelming”.

His photographic style can be described as a fusion of Expressionism and Photo-Realism, with layer on layer of colour resembling the ‘scumbling’ technique in painting.
