imageGhislaine Howard has just been named as a ‘Woman of the Year' for her achievement as an artist and her contribution to society.

This exhibition charts the development of her recently completed painting 'The Empty Tomb' which was created specifically for Liverpool Cathedral's Capital of Culture celebrations The painting was inspired by the artist’s experience walking the urban spaces between the two Cathedrals, making studies of those places where rough sleepers had found temporary shelter - the blankets and cardboard boxes bearing the traces of their recent occupants.

The resulting studies suggested a kinship with familiar images from her own life, the recent death of her father, illness of her mother and the images of the Pietà – one of the greatest of which, by Ecole di Roberti, hangs in the Walker Art Gallery.

The visitor can see how the artist has fused these elements together over a period of time to create the final painting which, housed in its steel reliquary, has a stark and resonant power that fuses the spiritual with the humanitarian.
