Slipped presents work by 11 artists working in clay, much of which has been created in Wysing’s on-site ceramics studio especially for the exhibition. Although many of the works begin with an interest in the material of clay and its properties, the artists explore ceramics from within their broader practices as sculptors, painters, performance and video artists. Works include potentially functional objects by Mark Essen, sculpted earthenware plaques by Lucy Conochie, large-scale pots by Jesse Wine and neon-lit environments by Simon Davenport.

Kindle is a new site-specific installation byManchester-based artist Nicola Dale that comprises 3,500 paper “candles” spread throughout the “Old Map Room” in The John Rylands Library in Manchester. Hand-made from unwanted bookpages, groups of “candles” are ordered by colour andcontent, an installation influenced by the map of the library “Aedificium” in Umberto Eco’s Post-Modern text The Name of the Rose.
